I’ve had a bag of clothing sitting in my closet for the past six months that I have desperately needed to bring into the dry cleaners/tailors not only to be cleaned but also to be tailored. I finally took care of it while I was home in Seattle and was amazed at what a difference it made…
I always am telling my clients to get their clothing tailored, even if it’s just a small adjustment, like getting a pair of pants hemmed or a dress taken in. It makes a world of difference when clothing fits correctly because not only will you look great but you will feel like you have introduced new pieces into your closet without having to go shopping. Don’t get me wrong, tailoring, hemming, dry cleaning etc. can definitely add up, especially if you’re like me and you wait until you have a huge bag full, but in the end it’s worth it – trust me.
Case in point…
Blazer: I love this blazer by BCBG but the front lapels were always flapping around and not staying put. On top of that I had somehow spilled something down the front of it that left a lovely, very visible stain. So, when I took this into the cleaners, I had them dry clean it but also had them tack the jacket flaps so now they stay in place. I just feel like overall, it looks more polished and much cleaner (literally).
Shirt: This Rebecca Taylor shirt was given to me a few years ago and I always loved the lightweight fabric and pattern but it had these pockets that would show and always hang out the bottom in a very awkward fashion. I had the bright idea to cut them out but then never followed up by actually sewing up the pockets. I finally went in and had them professionally sewed up and it has made a world of difference.
Jeans: I love wide leg jeans but they are without fail always way too long for me! This might seem like a no brainer, but taking these up a few inches and keeping the original hem has made these jeans feel like new again!
Takeaway Tip: Investing in what you own can save you money down the line, so by holding your clothing hostage in a dry cleaning/hemming/altering pile for longer than necessary, you could be doing yourself a huge disservice!
