love vs cringe

FAVORITE #1

Yesterday I received an interesting comment from a reader named Michelle, who asked me what my top three favorite, and top three least favorite outfits (read: cringe-inducing) were since starting the blog. At first I wasn’t sure if I wanted to remind you guys of some of the outfits I put out there, or maybe have people judge some of my past looks, but then I thought, no, this should be pretty humorous and nostalgic in a way. A way of looking at where I started to where I am now – not only in fashion and style but also in life.

Once I decided to delve in, I really had to think about the question, because after five years of blogging my daily outfits, I have quite a few to pick from. So, I started sifting through my backlog of thousands of photos and immediately got overwhelmed. I was able to pinpoint some looks that I now see just think, “what in the world was I thinking?” but I have to remind myself that it probably worked for that time in the fashion and what was trendy or hip. But, that’s what makes fashion fun, right? All the experimenting and trying out different styles. Anyway, I finally narrowed them down and came up with these six photos showcasing a few of my favorite and least favorite looks created between 2008 and 2013.

Lately I’ve been very into neutral pieces paired with a pop of color – namely red. The great part about styling an outfit that is made up of understated colors, is it makes accenting with a bright hue simple and fun. In this case, I just added a bold bag and a stand out lipstick to an otherwise very neutral ensemble.

P.S. My Dad took these two photos (below) last year and for some reason I never ended up posting them. I came across them recently and thought it would be fun to show two more ways I’ve worn these fun leather maroon pants! Not sure why they look more red below, but I promise they are the same pants! Spent the day yesterday walking around the Marais and stopped off to admire the Place des Vosges, which is one of my favorite spots in Paris. Afterward I grabbed brunch at Les Philosophes, then spent the afternoon reading and getting some work done at a nearby cafe. I leave tonight to fly back to New York, which is always bittersweet for me when Paris is involved, but I feel so refreshed, inspired and ready to take on the holidays and new beginnings. Hope this week has been a happy and productive for everyone so far! xo

black and gray

I can’t tell you how much use I got out of this faux fur vest while I was in Paris. I layered it under almost everything, and I loved how it added that bit of added luxe to every outfit.

Overall, I wore and remixed all the basic pieces that I brought, such as this pleated gray skirt (remixed here and here!) with tights, boots and my go-to black bag. I think it’s true what they say (or what I’ve come to believe) that when you pack for certain trips, it’s a good idea to keep your clothing fairly monochromatic. In this case, it was black, gray and navy, and it definitely worked for me. :)

More photos from my recent trip to Paris! Packing for this type of trip can feel so overwhelming, especially if where you are going, the weather is cold, because you have to factor in bulky layers. I decided to try and keep things simple by bringing easy pieces I could mix and match and then pull the whole look together with a tailored overcoat, or as Jenna Lyons like to call it, “my candy wrapper.”

Seeing that it was frigid most days while we were wandering around quaint Parisian streets, it ended up not really mattering what I was wearing underneath because my jacket was kept on at least 75 percent of the time. But I made sure to bring a coat (or coats rather) I love and this navy one from Zara definitely did the trick. And on days that I wanted to spice it up a bit, I simply layered it with my favorite faux fur vest to give it a dressier feel.
