It’s been quite the journey (over a year in a fact) from when I first decided to dye my hair a raspberry red color for a collaboration with L’Oreal (watch the YouTube video here) to then deciding to become a full-fledged blonde. But let’s back up a bit and start from the beginning…
My Beach Beauty Must-Haves
#NakedState With Herbal Essences
In this day and age, we are so connected to our phones, devices, computers –you name it, we are probably on more than one at a time! Admittedly, I can find it very hard to turn everything off for fear of missing out, but luckily, I grew up with my Mother and Grandmother who taught me the importance of mindfulness and meditation, and how beneficial it is to find the time to strip away the superficial and focus on the authentic.
Because an amazing thing happens when I strip away the noise, the clutter and the commotion of my everyday stress. I become present, live in the moment, and reconnect with my true self again, allowing my creativity to flow and for greatness to happen, in whatever form it might be.
Now for a little segue, you all remember the past Herbal Essences commercials (the shower scenes haha) and how good the products smelled, right? Well now the brand is introducing two new collections – Herbal Essences Naked Clean & Refresh, and Herbal Essences Naked Smooth & Soft Shampoo and Conditioner, which are both free of heavy residues, parabens or dyes.
They approached me about working with their the latest collection, which is focused around who you are in your most pared down, #nakedstate of mind, and because of everything I just mentioned above, I was intrigued to experience and learn more.
I started by spending an afternoon with the very talented Celebrity Hairstylist Charles Baker Strahan who taught me all about the Naked Collection and walked me through all the steps needed to create the beachy, loose waves I wanted. Because my hair is fine, he used the Herbal Essences Naked Clean & Refresh Shampoo and Conditioner, which smells of strawberries and mint, to cleanse and brighten it before styling.
Now I’ll walk you through our process!
The Naked Volumizing Soufflé (the mousse) is best to put in your hair when it’s really wet and fresh from the shower. Apply at the roots and then work it towards the ends. Twist your hair to wring out the excess moisture in your hair, which will also help to more evenly distribute the product through your hair.
Next, because I have naturally curly hair and it can tend to get a bit frizzy around the hair lines, Charles recommended combing the hairline area and tucking it behind my ears to smooth out the cow licks and extra curly areas. He suggests also using a bobby pin or a flat clip to hold it in place to allow the hair to air dry.
Save your hair styling for the last part of getting ready. He explained to me that the heat is what changes the shape of hair, so doing too much in the way of styling with a blow dryer is sort of a waste in energy.
Tip: A rough dry can do the trick because you only need the hair to be around 90% dry.
Charles blew out my edges with a large natural bristle brush and a diffusing nozzle, then added loose waves with an iron.
Tip: If you reshape wave or curl with irons or wands, hair is much less likely to frizz and you can also comb or brush it to integrate waves and/or build body or volume.
Lastly, he spritzed my hair with the Naked Flexible Hold Spritzer to hold waves and scrunch it in to create a beachy look.
Tip: Using the Naked Dry Shampoo is a great way to add extra body and volume too!
After my hair consultation and styling session with Charles, I headed to a meditation session at ISHTA Yoga to learn some tips on how to quiet the mind and center the body through breath and movement. It was a lovely mix of yoga and meditation, and I found it so amazing and calming to sit quietly for an hour with no phone. I came out of the session so relaxed and refreshed, plus my hair totally stayed in tact while moving through my yoga flow. Then later on in the evening, I went with my dear friend Liz to Rockwood Music Hall for an 8PM showing of the band Bellehouse. I love live music and this New York-based group is a mix of Old Time and folk revival with touches of Celtic, classic rock, soul and Motown to name a few. It was a great day overall and I loved getting in touch and taking time for myself to enjoy things that bring me happiness.

My Favorite Dark Berry Lipsticks by NARS
I started wearing NARS lipstick last year sometime when I saw a girl wearing the most beautiful berry color and asked her what it was, which she told me was called Bette. Then a few months ago, I swung into the NARS store on Bleecker to check out any other fall colors I might need and that’s when I discovered Charlotte. I was so taken with it I had to get it!
Anyway, above are some recent photos where I am wearing these two lipsticks so you can see what they look like on. In the first and second photo, I am wearing Bette, and in the third photo I am wearing Charlotte. I will say, that lipstick shades can look different on everyone due to your natural lip color and just generally how different colors wear next to your skin tone.
Shop my favorite dark berry NARS lip colors below, along with my favorite matching nail polishes from Deborah Lippmann, perfect for the holiday season!
Takeaway Tips On Wearing Dark Lipstick:
Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize! It’s funny how the seasons that are the most fun to wear dark lipstick, tend to be the hardest time to actually wear them! Isn’t that ironic? I don’t know about you, but my lips get super chapped and start peeling the minute the temperatures drop, and let’s be honest, that’s not a cute look when you are wearing a dark berry lip!
So with that said, I recommend Mary Kay Satin Lips Set, which comes with one Satin Lips Lip Mask, which buffs away dry skin, and one Satin Lips Lip Balm, that moisturizes and helps keep lips soft.
After you’ve pampered your lips, make sure to line them with either a sheer liner or one that is a close match to the color you are wearing. I like NARS Velvet Lip Liner in Belle Mare, which works well with Bette and Charlotte, or really any dark berry lip color.
Once your lips are lined, fill them in with your color of choice, et voila! You have beautiful berry colored lips!
Backstage at Tracy Reese with Mary Kay
Whenever I step backstage, I am always in awe of how many people it takes to make everything happen. There are stylists, makeup artists, hair stylists, nail artists, coordinators, photographers, media, press, you name it and everyone has a very specific and timely job to do. It looks a bit like pure chaos, but everyone just works together to make the magic happen that we see on the runway.
The Tracy Reese SS16 collection was inspired by light; focusing on a theme of transparency and layering fabrics together. By using sequins and beautiful rhinestones, Tracy incorporated shine and sparkle but in subtle and organic ways. The beauty look translated by celebrating shine and luminosity, giving off a natural yet modern, fresh aesthetic.
Doing a final run thru before the show.
Tracy Reese Spring/Summer 2016 Makeup:
SKIN:
1. Prep your skin for a glowing, luminous finish. First, use the Satin Lips Mask, which is the best prep for lipstick ever. Apply it to the lips for 1-2 minutes to
exfoliate.
2. Mix TimeWise Repair® Volu-Firm Night Treatment with Retinol
with TimeWise® Luminous-Wear Liquid Foundation
to get that radiant look. You can use Mary Kay Concealer under your eyes as needed.
3. Apply Mary Kay Extra Emollient Night Cream on the brow bone and around the eye area for a subtle glow.
EYES:
1. Create a defined lash by using Lash Love Lengthening Mascara in black.
2. To get the bronzed eye look, use Mary Kay Mineral Eye Color in Amber Blaze if you have fair skin or Rosegold if you have darker skin. Start at the lash line and blend downward with a fluffy brush.
3. On top of the shadow, use Mary Kay’s At Play Bold Fluid Eyeliner in Gold Metal
but make sure to blend it in with the shadow, downward and across the
lash line using a pointy brush.
4. To really get an extra bit of shimmer and shine, dab NouriShine Plus Lip Gloss
in Silver Moon onto the lid.
LIPS:
1. Now that your lips are prepped, use True Dimensions Lipstick in Sizzling Red to get a dewy, “bitten” lip by dabbing on just above the top lip line and blend with fingers to create a stain.
2. Apply NouriShine Plus Lip Gloss in Pink Wink on top to the center of the lip.
CHEEKS:
1. You want to get a “just caught in the wind” look so use Mary Kay At Play Lip
& Cheek Stick in Peach Pop for fair skin or Razzleberry dark skin, which will give you a soft, rosy glow. Make sure to apply in a circular motion and
blend until you get a soft stain.
2. Optional: Apply rhinestone “freckles” for a bit of sparkle!
Et voila! You just recreated the exact look that was worn at the Tracy Reese show, so congratulations! Now go out on the town and flaunt it! :)

4 Simple Ways To Style Your Hair
Today’s post and video is all about four simple ways to style your hair in no time with minimal product just by changing up your part or pulling your hair up off your face into a high bun. I also think you can easily update your everyday look just by by playing with different lipstick shades. A red versus a bright pink versus a nude color can transform your face.
But back to the hair styles at hand! When it comes to hair parts, often times, women part their hair on auto-pilot and if you’ve been doing it the same way for years, changing your part can update your whole look! And whenever I really want to switch it up, I whip my hair off my face and style it in a high bun. I immediately feel sophisticated and chic.
Watch my newest video to see how I quickly and easily achieved these four easy styles! xo
